Myasthenia gravis and Medical Cannabis

We have found that whole plant cannabis can help a range of conditions that span the gamut of medical pathology ranging from seizures to chronic pain and many other diseases in between. One reason for this is that the endocannabinoid system is in most cells in our body. It promotes homeostasis which is a state of natural physiological balance in which there is neither an excess nor deficit of activity. I believe this is one reason medical cannabis can help treat many different conditions.

One condition that we have found is helped by medical cannabis is myasthenia gravis. Myasthenia gravis is an auto-immmune disorder. Patients have weakness in ocular, limb, and respiratory muscles as well as muscles needed for swallowing, speaking and chewing. Patients can have eyelid drooping or double vision. Patients can have trouble speaking swallowing or chewing. The patient’s own immune system attacks proteins in the postsynaptic membrane of the neuromuscular junction (acetylcholine receptors or receptor-associated proteins). Cannabis can help auto immune disorders. It can be helped by cannabis as it is anti-inflammatory and immunosupressive. There is also preliminary data that suggests that cannabis can help enhance neuromuscular transmission by increasing the loading of Acetlycholine synaptic vesicles.
